Today there are more choices than ever when it comes to graduation product lines. Graduation ceremonies have been taking place since the 14th century, yet graduation product lines changed little up until the end of the last century.

Robes and graduation attire was always part of the graduation ceremony, dating back to medieval England. The graduation gowns that are part of graduation product lines today are a reflection of those that were worn hundreds of years ago. The formal occasion calls for formal and very sober attire. Graduation gowns have been worn in the United States for the past 100 years for grammar school, high school and college graduations.

As grammar school and high school graduation attire is rented, the tassel is usually the only thing the graduate can keep, besides the diploma. High school graduates cherish their tassels long into adulthood. The tassel dates back to medieval times as well and is reminiscent of the cords that adorned the hoods of early graduates. Schoolteachers in England wore the tam hat with the tassel on an everyday basis until the mid 1900s.

Years ago, announcements were the only way to let people know of an event. There was no e-mail or telephone. People sent out announcements upon the birth of a baby, a marriage or a graduation. Graduation announcements have made a bit of a comeback in recent years with the introduction of the computer into our society. People can now again announce to the world that their student has graduated high school or college.

Over the years, graduation product lines have steadily increased to encompass other items that are used to commemorate this occasion.  In the early part of the twentieth century, diplomas began being encased in leather covers so they could be better preserved.   Graduation stationery and other novelties also began surfacing in the mid part of the twentieth century.  Towards the latter part of the twentieth century and to this day, graduation product lines have become a burgeoning industry.  Today there are ornaments, dolls, autograph books and other small novelties that one can give a graduate of Kindergarten, grammar school or high school.

During the past twenty years, Kindergarten graduations have become a popular way to celebrate the fact that a young child is beginning to start his or her school life.  In the United States, Kindergarten is optional for five year olds; children do not have to attend school until they are six years old.  Kindergarten has been a popular concept for the past century in the United States and was originally designed as a chance for small children to become assimilated into the school system.  Today, most children attend Kindergarten and have a graduation that may even include cap and gown.

Throughout the years, graduation product lines have steadily increased to the multi billion dollar industry they are now.  Today, graduation products offer something for every graduate - from Kindergarten to College.
